I submit a truck.... A dime a million F150:But hear me out. This is no normal 12th generation f-150 because it has the 3.5 twin turbo v6. It’s both the first f 150 with a turbocharged gasoline engine, and the last F-150 to use a steel construction rather than an aluminum affair. It was also the first F150 with a Raptor model, if that makes a difference.

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t know much about the ecoboost motor because the 12th gen Ford Lobo was mostly sold with the V8, but it’s probably a fairly uncommon engine in the 12th gen trucks since it was only sold for three years (2011-2014) and despite the good performance, it was bound to be overshadowed by the Raptor.

Kinja'd!!!

I also think that the F30 Active Hybrid 3 will be a future classic, sold in small numbers due to it’s price and not necessarily worthy performance, to that just add the fact that after the LCI it was replaced by a four cylinder hybrid. Can you think of any other hybrid i6 BMWs apart from the other sales flop, the AH5? no... you can’t.

So, what cars do you think will be future classics? Here are the rules:

1. It must be a car that was meant to be high volume
2.It must be 2005 or newer
3.It must’ve not appreciated since it was sold new yet.
4.It can’t be a car that is a bound to be classic because of environmental factors (say, a 328d holding it’s value for longer for being a diesel in the US).

I don’t know how late they made them, but at my previous job we had a 2002 Ford F350 regular cab, long bed, 4x4 with a gas V10 and a 6 speed manual. I loved that truck dearly, but so did everyone else so it got driven - a lot. And hard. Towing boats all summer and plowing all winter. Manual everything, radio only. No features.

Amazingly, it’s still alive. The bed fell off years ago and we put a nice flatbed on it about 5-6 years ago (before I left that job). I’ve seen it at the current owner’s place, they’re using it for a landscaping business, so, more hard work for that poor truck. Find me one of those that hasn’t been beaten to death and that’s a future classic for me.

Like this (it was even this color) but the V10.

Kinja'd!!! Pickup_man > Spanfeller is a twat

I think all trucks become classics at some point, purely due to the nature that they pretty much all get used up eventually and the few that survive in pristine condition are bound to demand at least a small premium. As for a run of the mill F-150, I don’t think it will ever be worth much. W hile the first eco-boost/last steel truck thing is a little unique the eco-boost was pretty widely accepted, and pretty quickly. The V8 trucks are actually harder to find, so I think those will command more someday. The Raptor however is clearly a future classic and will likely over shadow every other F-150 of that generation.

As for my pick for a future classic, I’ll still with trucks, and the same gen F-150 too. The F-150 Tremor.

Kinja'd!!!

Regular cab short beds always go for more money, and this is a mild performance truck at that. They only time the Eco-Boost was offered in regular cab short box trim, and a nice subtle appearance package to set it apart. On the tails of the Lightning however the Tremor failed to live up to the hype (even though it’s faster) and was never deemed a worthy Lightning successor. I don’t believe sales were great, so rarity will likely also be a factor. I fully expect these to climb in value eventually.

Any SLK with a manual transmission. But especially the 6 cylinders. So about 1% of whats on sale.

If thats too exclusive though, scions with the weird dealer options. Most everything they made atleast looked unique and thats 75% of what makes the future classics that arent "because racecar"

Apart from the Tremor the 3.5 Eco-Boost was only available in base trim long bed trucks, which is what made the Tremor special. Why Ford decided that I don’t know, but if you wanted a regular cab short bed truck you were stuck with the 5.0 or the small eco-boost, and I think the highest trim level available was the XLT.

But that puts it back into “low-volume” territory. On a second thought I don’t think the SS qualifies either. It was meant to use up parts prior closing up the plant, thus it was never meant to be sold in volume.

Whereas the G8 V6/GT were meant to replace the Grand Prix as a volume car, I think at once point local production was also considered, but then Chapter 11 happened.

Kinja'd!!! Quadradeuce > 404 - User No Longer Available
06/25/2018 at 10:03

The criteria was that it was meant to be high volume, not that it achieved that volume. I certainly think GM wanted to sell as many Kappas as possible, unlike the Chevy SS which was just there to fulfill an export contract with Holden.

1st generation Genesis sedan R-spec with the 5.0 Tau engine. not many came that way, before the re-design.

G8 GT, GXP, Chevy SS, and maybe bundle the ergonomically-problematic Kappas in there, just because they will be rare.

Lotus Evora.

Volt, CR-Z, Bolt, and other early hybrid/electrics... which could be a positive or negative depending on whether you like them or not , and which end of the battery pack you are on.

... I think most new affordable cars are boring as watching dry paint fade... so I am having trouble with the possibility of them becoming classics. Trying to predict what will be largely  disposed of, then rare, then prized later is a tricky guessing game.

... and expensive cars might as well already be classics from the moment they roll off the line , for what they cost.

Yes, the 3.5 isn’t available in the current trucks. Considering that my rc/sb 2.7 is traction limited below about 60mph, that’s probably not a bad a thing. You can get the 5.0 in a rc/sb, but I’m not really sure why.

That’s what I meant, the 3.5 which generally, in my experience, is what Eco-Boost refers to, but I should have clarified.

That’s why I think the Tremor will be sought after, because it was the only time you could the the 3.5EB, Ford’s highest performance truck engine, in reg cab short bed form.

Because V8 noises and hot rod potential, that’s why. Other than that, yeah, just get the 2.7, much better all around option.

While I hessitate to call an SLK exotic, top gear often refering to that niche as “hair dressers cars”, what I see in a lot of your high output, flashy cars is that theyre sold to people that want to be seen in the car in the now than any kind of investment strategy.

Cars, especially new cars are so rarely a good financial investment. And for the vain people who are afraid of stalling out their aston martin at a light, an automatic just makes more sense. Also take into account that so many people who can afford these cars are up there in age. Possibly with knee problems.

TLDR, even exotics are bought by people who couldnt be bothered with resale value or the hassle of a manual

I mean, it’s drastic, a manual f575 might go for 20-30,000 euros more than an F1 one.

If I was buying an exotic, I’d just try to deal with the consequences of havi a special car and get rhe manual. Even on a semi regular car like a Cayman.

I’d like to think the Outback XT with a manual might become a classic someday, and not just because I own one I’d like to hang on to until that happens (:

Long overshadowed by both the WRX, it’s sibling the Legacy GT, and the Forester XT it’s very much the cheapest way into a turbo Subaru . That said it’s also lifted on outback springs, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to the performance crowd. I struggled with that too at first, considering dropping it on Legacy GT suspension like some people do but instead I decided to embrace the outback-ness and just uncorked the exhaust, tuned it to an easy 300hp   and left it as is . I’m really glad I did!

There will be other wagons with turbo motors , and lifted wagons with awd, and maybe even wagons with a manual. I have a sad feeling however that we might never again see the combination of all of those things in one that Subaru gave us from 2005-2008. Right after this the Outback moved from wagon to full on SUV and dropped the turbo and eventually the manual too. It was the end of an era
